![]() One patient from each group reported symptoms associated with mild ED, but they experienced satisfying sexual orgasms after psychotherapy for 2 months. Six months postoperatively, the erectile functions of all cases were comparable to the level preoperatively except three patients. The mean (±s.d.) times required to recover sexual function were 35.6 (☖.0) days in the longitudinal incision group and 54.0 (±5.8) days in the circumferential incision group ( P<0.05). The mean (±s.d.) operative time was 19.1 (☓.9) min in the longitudinal incision group and was 45.1 (☖.5) min in the subcoronal circumferential degloving incision group ( P<0.05). Sexual function was evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively using an abridged International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. ![]() Fourteen patients underwent longitudinal incisions after ultrasound localization nine patients underwent subcoronal circumferential degloving incisions. From July 2001 to July 2014, 23 patients were identified with penile fractures. So it’s a good idea to seek medical care as soon as possible. The objective of this study was to compare the long-term clinical outcomes from longitudinal incisions and subcoronal circumferential degloving incisions in the surgical treatment of penile fractures. One study showed that 80% of people who did not get surgery had long-term dysfunction of the penis. Delaying medical care for even 8 hours may increase the risk of erectile dysfunction. When not treated, a penile fracture can lead to a permanent curve in the penis and erectile dysfunction. The injury usually needs surgery to explore the extent of the injury and to repair the tunica albuginea. If someone is diagnosed with a penile fracture, a urologist will evaluate them. This can be done with an ultrasound or an MRI. Sometimes testing may be needed to check for a penile fracture. It’s usually easy to diagnose based on the description of how the injury occurred and a physical exam of the penis. Someone who injured their penis in this way should see a healthcare provider right away. How is a penile fracture diagnosed and treated? These symptoms are:ĭifficulty urinating if the tube that carries urine (called the urethra) is injured ![]() And they will start right after the injury. The symptoms of a penile fracture will be immediately obvious. For example, this can happen if the penis slips out of the vagina during sexual intercourse and then receives the impact of a forceful thrust. This is because these are situations where the penis could be accidentally bent with force while it is erect. Usually, penile fractures happen during sex or masturbation. But if it’s filled up, it breaks more easily. If a balloon only has a small amount of water, it isn’t easy to pop. It may help to think of the tunica albuginea like a water balloon. So if an abnormal force is applied in just the wrong way, it can tear. ![]() But when erect, the tunica albuginea is tense and can’t change shape as easily. When the penis is flaccid (soft), the tunica albuginea is flexible. And it only occurs when the penis is erect. Penile fractures occur when there is a large amount of force applied to the penis. When a penile fracture occurs, the penis can no longer hold the shape of an erection. This is what makes the penis physically stiff during an erection. Inside the penis, there are two important structures:ġ) Corpora cavernosa: These are basically sponges that fill with blood during an erection.Ģ) Tunica albuginea: This is a lining that surrounds the corpora cavernosa, and it holds the blood in place when the penis is erect. What is a penile fracture?Ī penile fracture is a rip or tear in an inner lining of the penis called the tunica albuginea. And it needs prompt medical treatment to prevent permanent dysfunction of the penis. Although it’s rare, a penile fracture is more likely to occur in certain sex positions. It is actually an injury to an inner layer of tissue that holds blood inside the penis. The word “fracture” is slightly misleading - given there is no actual injury to a bone. A penile fracture can occur when an erect penis is forcibly bent. ![]()
